Former State Sen. Gerald "Jerry" Koch wore many hats in his
83 years.
Among them: politician, coach, war veteran and great-grandfather.
Koch died Thursday of pneumonia after a brief illness.
Koch represented Ralston in the Nebraska Legislature from 1975 to1983.
He then served as the mayor of Ralston from 1984 to 1988 - a community
he called home for more than 50 years.
As a senator, Koch advocated funding for schools. His passion for politics
rubbed off on at least one well-known name in Nebraska politics. When
Koch ran for the Legislature, his son Rick Koch said, Koch's campaign
manager was Bob Kerrey, who later served as Nebraska's governor and a
U.S. senator.
After Koch served two terms in the Legislature, he returned to Ralston
to put his energy into projects that would "keep some small-town
flavor alive," Rick Koch said. He helped revitalize downtown Ralston.
Supporting small business was so important to him, his son said, that
he refused to use coupons for chain gas stations, instead choosing to
fill up at an independent gas station downtown even if it meant spending
10 cents
more a gallon.
Koch earned a bachelor's degree from Hastings College and, already having
served in World War II, began teaching history and coaching sports. He
coached baseball, basketball and football. He and his wife, Joan, settled
in Ralston in 1954.
Koch is survived by his wife; sons Rick of Omaha and Scott of York; five
grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
